Have had plenty of new finds around the hood, but have had little time to post em up. Here's the roun dup:
Round One.
Couple of okayish op-shop finds. Haven’t listened to the Sherlock Holmes ones yet, but looking forward to some ol fashioned murder mystery / detective story telling that doesn’t really on hi-tech DNA matching, amazing psychic abilities, extreme white teeth and a generically ‘attractive’ female character who creates sexual tension with her colleagues. (If you couldn’t guess the TV show, that’s because the answer is all of them).
Jacques Loussier and co is pretty good. Jazzed up Bach using only piano, double bass and drums. It is pulled off well and makes for ‘easy listening’.
The Sound of Big Band Jazz in Hi Fi has some good names on it, Cannonball Adderly, Chet Baker, Art Pepper and, well those are the only ones I’m familiar with.
Popped in to Alien records. 45s a bit cheaper than Groovy and they’ve got some gems in there. I picked up a few including Midnight Star – Freak-A-Zoid, and Sly & The Family Stone – If You Want Me To Stay. Picked up another Dee D Jackson hoping to strike it rich, but not so in this draw. Was very excited to find the Miami Vice Soundtrack Part Two, because it has this one particular Roxy Music song which only exists on this soundtrack, and it is sexy '80s at its best. The light was shone upon it thanks to this cover version.
Round Two.

While giving a tour at the University of Auckland, I came across a box of records outside of the music library. I have picked records up from here in the past, which all have contributed to my schooling of classical music. It’s cool, they just leave a couple of boxes of records outside the door for people to help themselves to. It makes me wonder what I have missed out on though. No doubt there are some gems in that library.
All Frenchy ones from this lot. Included are four Georges Moustaki LPs which are enjoyable enough to be keepers for sure. Lots of French spoken word, though no good for me, unless I use that French lessons box set. Oh and some real nice classical recs as well.
Round Three.
Went to some op shops with the cheapest records I’ve seen in sometime. 3 for $1 in one shop, and 25c each in another! Got some okay stuff, nothing worth writing home about though. At the market on Sunday I picked up a couple, another Beat Street soundtrack and one disco rec by Suzi Lane Crispy King is now spinning. When I purchased it the (Maori) seller said “you like that black nigger music aye”. Ways to make a whitey feel awkward, I was gonna purchase a Queen record as well, but the Suzi lane was the only one not scratched up. So, in short, my answer was: Yes, yes I do.

Oh yeah, and another seller at the Market was loudly proclaiming that the vinyl record is the new CD, which makes no sense at all, but hey, if she can sell her Kamahl records for $5 each then good for her.
Those Jacques Loussier look great! The cover alone looks like it'd hold some gold.
ReplyDeleteThe idea of a box of records outside the music library gives me a mental image of Mr Ripley in his janitor uniform solving an equation on the blackboard outside the Physics lecture hall. So cool.
I loooooooove Midnight Star. Well done bro.
