A Vinyl Affair

Selling at record fairs is a preferable way to part with records out of the collection. You get to see records which can be hard to part with find their new appreciative owners. I’m pretty strict to not buy anything when selling, but a little non-committal glance at the other sellers crates….  If its $2 - $5 dollars... as long I’m selling more than I buy….

Dr Doom - First Come First Served (Instrumentals)
Kool Keith is funny as fuck, does his own thing, weirdo as and has million ways to tell rappers they doo doo. Seen him perform twice, owned a couple of CDs and MP3s, but never had him on wax. These instrumentals are only good by association of the lyrics that were on em – ‘No Chorus’ still sounds tough as shit tho. This could be the start of the Kool Keith catalogue.

The Chicks - C’mon Chicks
Seen this album a couple of times recently and was curious, but not for the prices I had seen it at. $5 was a better price to pay for curiosity. It’s got hot drum rolls and many sweet sounding moments. It’s a keeper for sure. Polite to say they’re not amazing signers, but c’mon now, these kiwi chicks rock it all the same! Here’s a clip of them in full 1967 context lip-sync’n it up on the ‘C’mon’ TV show of which they we’re apart (stick around for the Joe Tex cover).

Marvin Gaye – I want You
This was kindly gifted to me and i'll be forever grateful. I can’t believe I was not schooled up on this album already. I got a Marvin Gaye Greatest Hits album and on a couple of Air NZ flights I listened to Flyin’ High in the Friendly Sky on repeat, but I never paid enough attention to him. For some reason I always pitted Al Green against him and I’m embarrassed I slept on this. Spent the afternoon on the couch chillin’ with this album playing. Cool babies were conceived to this album. The score of the day and a new favorite.

Blackstar – Definition
Hellooooooo everybody. Not until I got home that I realised I already had this. Dahhh… However, doubles of a 12” is how it used to be done, and better to play out the reissue than your OG. This is a hip-hop anthem and Blackstar were easily the best alliance in hip-hop “whyy-oohhhh.” Maybe I should try complete the Rawkus ‘train car’ series. The seller had some dope 12s in his crate which i got a couple…

J-Live – The Upgrade
My man Coffee Simon who is a self-confessed full grown kid calls J-Live the "full grown kid of hip hop" - still holding down the ‘4 Elements’ and the ‘culture’. Sadly it seems being earnest went out of fashion. I still got respect for the J-Live even though respect seems out of fashion as well. Oddisee’s production is truly brilliant on this one - those horns! Damn!! Plus Posdanous ! Personal classic.

Cali Agents – The Good Life.
I had a hip hop show when I was teenager and this track was in heavy rotation. Planet Asia is the rappers’ rapper - whatever that means. Top 5 and top 10 MC lists are problematic because he and a few others will always float around it. Rasco was the perfect pairing with P.A and hot sauce on Peanut Butter’s Run The Line track around the same time as this. “Don’t flash my cash – go to the bank and put it all with the stash

John Themius – Atmospheric conditions.
From the new age record label CODA, this smooth guitar player is on some classical finger picking melodic vibes. New age would be off putting to many people and there is some cringe to this for sure. This record you would hear getting either a massage or while being put on hold. However the 1985 instrumentation is captivating on this one. This is part of CODA’s Landscape Series which intrigues me a lot and now I must seek them out! There’s an insert with info on all the others including one which is sounds only generated by voice.

  1. A few thoughts: I had a great discussion with Coffee Simon about the latest Evidence album. High praise from him and made me go back to listen. Dude has taste for someone whose tastebuds have had many cups of coffee and cigarettes. Legend.

The Good Life! Holy shit what a blast from the Le Flow past. Thanks for that. Right up there with EPMD - Da Joint, when it comes to late night memories. Caltex for Mrs Mac's Pies and shining lazer pointers into glass pipes filled with indo smoke.

Anyone who says "run your gibs" on a hip-hop track is certified legend status.
